At just over 1500m above sea level Heidelberg has a "moist highveld grassland" climate.

Summer months average a minimum temperature of 17°C and a maximum of approximately 28°C. Winter days have been known to reach temperatures as high as 25°C and after cold fronts reach inland, frost does occur. But generally the winter months averages a low of 5°C and a maximum of 19°C.

The area is reknown for it's very active summer thunderstorms in the late afternoons. Rainfall is between 550mm and 650mm per annum and rain falls mostly in the summer season.

Heidelberg falls within the so-called Maize Triangle. The districts of Bronkhorstspruit, Cullinan and Heidelberg which holds important agricultural land where ground-nuts, sunflowers, cotton and sorghum are produced.
